Suppositories aren’t the most trendy product in the nutraceutical industry, but they should be. While the mention of rectal suppositories may generate a laugh or two, they are one of the most effective therapies out there today. Suppositories allow you to absorb a variety of nutrients and advanced compounds directly into your bloodstream, without the need for injection or IV.
What are Suppositories?
Rectal suppositories are a way of delivering compounds into the body through the rectum. Healus suppositories contain different nutritional compounds, with a non-irritating plant-based fatty acid base. They are inserted into the rectum, where they dissolve and the ingredients are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
The Suppository Advantage
One of the major advantages of suppositories is that they absorb better than typical oral supplements. When taking a supplement orally, it must pass through the gastrointestinal tract, and then be metabolized by the liver. Throughout this long journey, a typical supplement may be degraded and reduced by the digestion process, losing some of the nutritional benefit. A suppository on the other hand, like an IV or injection, bypasses the liver metabolism completely, and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream by way of the highly vascularized colon. This ensures that none of the ingredients are degraded before they are absorbed, and allows for rapid absorption.
A typical oral supplement is degraded by stomach acid, losing some of the nutritional benefit. Suppositories absorb directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestion and metabolism process, allowing for maximum absorption.
Not all nutrients are orally well-absorbed. Compounds like glutathione for instance, have extremely poor oral absorption, even when they are in a liposomal capsule. This is why you typically see glutathione administered as either an injection or an IV. However, delivering glutathione in a suppository is an excellent way to absorb this compound. Because suppositories are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, they are on par with injections and IV’s. But unlike injections and IV’s, they are more convenient, much less expensive, and a whole lot less painful. In fact, suppositories are pain free and can be administered yourself in the comfort of your own home.
Additionally, many people today have compromised digestion due to intestinal inflammation and an unbalanced microbiome. Poor digestion can affect how much you absorb nutritionally from your food and your oral supplements. Suppositories can be a way to deliver much needed nutrients into your system when your gut is compromised. This also helps you avoid any potential food interactions that can chemically alter your supplement. Plus, it alleviates that nauseous feeling that some oral supplements can cause if you have a sensitive stomach.
Suppositories also allow for higher concentrations of nutrients to be delivered into your system at one time. Due to the size of a suppository as compared to a typical capsule, it can contain a larger volume of nutritional compounds. For many people who don’t like to swallow several pills, suppositories can be a great advantage.
Another benefit to suppositories is that they are fast acting. The active ingredients in a typical suppository are absorbed in just 15-20 minutes. Similar to an injection or IV, your body receives the nutrients it needs right away.
Suppository Advantage
-
Compounds in suppositories are absorbed more efficiently and quickly than the average capsule by being delivered directly into the bloodstream through the colon.
-
Suppositories have a similar absorption rate to an injection or IV, but are painless, and much less expensive.
-
Suppositories can help supplement nutritional deficiencies due to poor digestion and a compromised microbiome.
-
The size of suppositories allows you to absorb a higher concentration of nutritional compounds than you can in a typical capsule.
-
With an absorption time of 15-20 minutes, suppositories quickly deliver nutrients into your body.
How to Use Suppositories
In general, suppositories are very easy to use. We have a few pro tips for you to ensure that your suppository journey is a successful one!
The key to suppositories is to keep them inserted for at least 15-20 minutes to ensure that the active ingredients are all absorbed. The fatty acid base of the suppository may absorb a little more slowly, or you may pass it in a bowel movement, which is fine. You just want to make sure that you allow 15-20 minutes for the active ingredients to get into your system.
Suppositories may stimulate your colon and promote a bowel movement. A way to ensure that you don’t pass the suppository too quickly is to insert it after you’ve already had a bowel movement. When your colon is empty, the suppository won’t have the same stimulating effect and you’ll have no trouble keeping it in. You won’t even know it’s there!
If you do feel an urgency to go to the bathroom, it’s likely that there is still fecal matter in your colon. In this situation, it’s best to lie down for 15-20 minutes to not further stimulate your bowels. After the 20 minutes have passed, you can relieve yourself. You may pass some of the suppository base, as that absorbs at a slower rate, but that is fine because your body has already had enough time to absorb the active ingredients.
While suppositories can be used anytime of day, it’s best to use one after a bowel movement, and avoid using one after a big heavy meal. Using a suppository right after you eat a large meal may stimulate your colon and speed up the digestive process. This can feel a little uncomfortable. And while it certainly won’t hurt you, you’ll be more comfortable waiting until your body has had a chance to digest.
Lastly, be forewarned that certain ingredients have an odor to them. Glutathione for instance has a sulfur smell. And while it won’t make you smell, if you happen to pass gas while the suppository is active, you and anyone around you will know it. But considering all the advantages suppositories bring you, a smelly fart is no big deal.
Pro Tips
-
Suppositories are best absorbed after a bowel movement and on a relatively empty stomach.
-
If you feel the urgency to go to the bathroom you can lie down for 15-20 minutes to relax your intestines and allow the suppository to fully absorb.
